Bobo's: As Shanghai's first and only bear bar, Bobo's is located in an apartment block's clubhouse underground. It's a bar for Chinese chubs and chub chasers to get to know one other, and well known amount the expats and visitors. Try here to gain a feel of what a traditional China gay bar with karaoke, dice games, card games is like.

Eddy's: As the longest operating gay bar in mainland China, Eddy's has been refurbished to include a healthy dose of chinois chic. It attracts a healthy blend of locals, expats and tourists of a somewhat more mature breed. The area around Eddy's has evolved into a gay district that has been named by a Japanese magazine as Shanghai's answer to Shinjuku-Ni-Chome which also includes Shanghai Studio, Manifesto, Transit Lounge and Arch Cafe. Friendly staff, a super cool Asian fusion décor, and a smorgasbord of not in-you-face Money Boys waiting for you to buy them a drink.

Frangipani: Despite its futuristic modern style, Frangipani has a laid-back and warm atmosphere not unlike what you'd find in 80s sitcom Cheers where patrons and service staff alike are on a first name basis. Hunter: Small bar popular with locals, expats and visitors. Owner Bai-Bing will give you a warm welcome. Some of the staff speak English. The music is not very loud, so it's easy to talk and make friends, or play cards or mahjong. Very friendly place.
